"Eagle's Seniors Bag Charity & Summer Cups

KETCHELL'S CRACKER CONTINUES CUP CURSE

Our senior team had the best of its opposition in the two pre-season cup competitions. The first official game of the team was against its old rivals Hobart Juventus. This match was the yearly charity shield match usually rostered mid-year. Although being the first game for two teams, it was still a competetive encounter. The Eagle's squad had only minimal personnel changes in the off season. One being the signing of keeper Zlatko Belanic from Croatia, and he gave confidence to the team by putting in a "man of the match" winning display. The final score was 2-1 with Richard Leszczynski opening the scoring with a header in the first half, and Richard Ketchell scored in the dying minutes with a scorching left foot drive.

In the opening game of the Summer Cup competition against Olympia, Eagle's laboured through to a 2-2 draw. Both Eagle's goals were scored by David Stoddart the latter being an equalising penalty.

The second game was against a new look Croatian side who were no match for an Eagle's side on the rebound following the previous weeks poor performance. Two goals by Richard Leszczynski, one to Craig Pitt and an own goal paved the way for a convincing 4-0 win.

Eagle's faced a lethargic Caledonians the following week and once again proved too strong for the opposition. A hat-trick by David Stoddart, including two penalties, and further goals to Craig Pitt and Richard Leszczynski concluded the 5-0 win which put the team into the final with one game to go.

The final game of the round robin competition was against Hobart Juventus and the team was narrowly defeated 2-3. Goals went to Andrew Leszczynski from the penalty spot and a rare late effort by Mark Leszczynski.

The final on Easter Monday saw the third meeting of Juventus and White Eagle in the pre-season matches. A good crowd saw Eagles play their best soccer of the season to date to overwhelm the Italian backed side. After being a goal down early the side went to the half time break a goal up, with two goals to Michael Driessen, his first for the season. The second half saw Eagle's stamp its authority on the game and further goals to David Stoddart and Craig Pitt underlined Eagle's dominance. A late consolation goal to Juventus saw the final score 4-2.

FOREST V SPURS
IN CLASSIC F.A. CUP ENCOUNTER

The 1991 Football Association Cup (Saturday May 18) should turn out to be one of the best F.A. cups of recent times with the two star studded attacking line-ups of Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspurs on show. Paul 'Gazza' Gascgoine and Gary Lineker for Spurs and Nigel Clough and Stuart Pearce for Forest should provide plenty of spectacular highlights at Wembley for all sport goers.

Forest reached the final by demolishing second division West Ham United 4-0 in a controversial semi-final. Spurs had the harder draw but overcame league champions Arsenal 3-1 including a spectacular long range free kick from Gazza.

The Scottish F.A. Cup, to be played on the same night should prove to be an interesting encounter between high flying Dundee United and semi-final slayers of Celtic, Motherwell. The absence of Rangers and Celtic should not detract from a tough physical game.

Submitted by Les Ware current under 17 coach

White Eagle Soccer Club look to have a bright future with it's under 14 youth side of 1990. Showing much promise, the squad of 15 players had a eventful year. Although the beginning of the season looked as though it offered plenty of competition, it was not until the first round of games was over that it became a one horse race with the young and enthusiastic chicks taking all before them. It was only time in seeing how high they would fly. New blood from the eastern shore, mixed with the current Eagle nest, showed plenty of skill and technique which won them the premiership and knock-out cup.

During the season under 14 Southern and State teams were selected. Players who were included in the southern reginal squad from White Eagle were Damien McMillan, Ben Freeman, Damien Bones, Sam Gorringe, Chris Holbrook, Mathew Boxall, Michael Murray, Adam Jones, Vance Fitzgerald, and Bradley Wolfe. With Jeff Holmes and Marcus Burn making the under 13 representative side. And out of this came state selection, which would not be an easy task as this squad went through undefeated.

Congratulaions must go to all of the above and D. Bones, M. Murray and B. Freeman for making state selection. Currently the under 14 youth side of 1990 is playing in the under 17 league with two wins from three games, an 8-1 win over Metro, a 2-3 loss to Croatia and a 3-2 win over Phoenix has set them up for an interesting year ahead.

With the calibre of D. Bones current Tas youth player and M. Murray who has 3 reserve games under his belt, it is only time which is holding back other players such as Samson-Gower, Pullen, Thomas, Jones, Gorringe and McMillan to name a few. But to help these players, interest that is shown to the seniors from the young players should be reversed, and only then we will know if there is an improvement.

Regards Les Ware

BBQ:

The Club held an informal B.B.Q. at Basil Michalkowski's property in Lenah Valley in March. Many thanks must go to Basil for allowing the club to use his property and to those who aided in setting up. Although only a small number were able to get there on a day that was promising rain and drizzle a good time was had by all. The B.B.Q. was organised at short notice for that weekend but those who came made the best of the fact the rain held off.

Due to the success of the day it is hoped the club can organise a similar event but closer to the end of the year when the weather is more predictable.

A number of '100 CLUB' tickets were sold on the day and thanks go to those who purchased a chance to win the $1000 dollar first prize.

Under 14 Team:

What a great start to the season for the Under 14 side coached by Bob Osuchowski with a 5-2 win over Calies. This put them straight into first place on the ladder. The game started out hard and fast with constant pressure being applied by Calies but our defence held out solidly with Adrian Kniaz, Dean Eddington and Darren Daido bringing most of Calies attacks to a halt. The forward line broke on numerous occasions and created some brilliant goals, with Daniel Osuchowski scoring three and Steven Bukoweicki and Andrew Quaggin scoring one each. This game was a 5-2 win where all the team played well.

Unfortunately this winning start was set back the next week against Kingborough where we slumped to a 2-1 defeat. Andrew Quaggin was the solitary goal scorer for Eagles. Kingborough proved to be just a better team on the day but all Eagle's players tried hard. Mathew Murray, Daniel Osuchowski and Dean Eddington all rated a mention this game.

The team provided a good return to form with a 2-1 win over Taroona, but this was a closely contested game which could have gone either way. A good header by Gerard Davis saw our first goal go in and shortly afterwards a break down the middle by Taroona levelled the scores. The second half was a similar affair and Eagle's winning goal came in the dying minutes of the game. A long shot by Dean Eddington saw the ball go over the keeper and into the net. Adrian Kniaz, Dean Eddington and Dominic Pietrzyckowski all rated mention this game.

The team continued it's winning streak with a 3-0 win over Howrah. Daniel Osuchowsk scored his second hat-trick for the year and helped put the team in current first position. The team has an important game against the second placeed team, South Hobart this week.

GOLF DAY:

The club had a very successful golf day on the 14th of April at the Claremont Golf Club. 55 competitors took part in the tournament in very fine and warm weather conditions. This day gave many the chance to play on a top golf course at only $10 for 18 holes of golf. The only complaint about the course was the state of the greens which were particularly sandy on the day. A number of players decided to stay on in the club rooms where the presentations were made to the winners. A Grade winner was P.Howard with 43 points and second was T.Higgins with 41. B Grade was also won with 43 points by R.Smith. Second spot was tied between K.Holmes, N.O'Brian and S.Templeman on 41. With the closest to the pin on the second hole claimed by R.Baker at 5.9m and on the eleventh by Greg Rosinski at 1.64m. There were predictably a number of low scores on the day.

It is our sad duty to inform you of the passing of our club Vice-President Bill Jones. Bill a life member, had been at the club for over 28 consecutive years. He was a respected member of the club and of the Polish Community. He recently received a Silver Medal from the Polish Government in exile for services to the Polish Community. He will be sadly missed by us at the club and our sympathy is extended to his family.

Many thanks must go the members of the Polish Association who at their Annual General Meeting colected $175 for the White Eagle Soccer Club. When funds are increasingly difficult to raise these donations are gladly accepted. In addition Stan Roberts donated $70 and a anonymous donation of $50 was also received.

Bogdan Dora should also be thanked for the obvious work load he put into erecting the large club emblem displayed on the Polish Club wall. The picture is a proud display of the club symbol.

The Talon is put together by Craig Pitt, David Stoddart Jnr and Andrew Leszczynski with input from a number of sources. It is designed to be a club bulletin, therefore we gratefully accept any articles that are submitted for inclusion. These can be passed on to members of the White Eagle S.C. committee. Thanks go to those who added to this issue and the previous issue of the Talon including Les Ware and Bob Osuchowski.

We would also like to remind you that 100 club tickets are still available. A number of tickets have been purchased in this chance to win $1000. Tickets are available at the Polish Club or from David Stoddart Snr. The F.A. Cup night should be remembered, it promises to be an entertaining night, also a anniversary night is planned for this year.
