"HAT-TRICK FOR EAGLES !
LATE CHARGE SECURES TITLE AGAIN
Once again, our Cadbury League team has captured the State League title. It was the
third title in as many years and the fourth in five years. The final margin may have been
ten points but the title was still wide open with three games to go. After their poorest
start for at least five years, including a loss and two draws in the first four games, the
team began to put it all together and went on an undefeated run that ended on the season's
second last game. The early loss also saw the end of the team's thirty-five game unbeaten
league run which stretched from early 1988.

The league-winning run stretched for sixteen games and included successive impressive
victories over Hobart Juventus (4-0 and 2-1) and Launceston Juventus (3-2 ).The season
also brought an emphatic victory in Cascade Summer Cup against Hobart Juventus and victory
over them again to retain the Charity Shield for the third successive year. Highlights of
the two successes were Scott Young's man of the match performance in the Charity Cup and
Craig Pitt's hat-trick in Eagle's first triumph in the Summer Cup. Coach Eugene Mycak's
game plan, including eliminating the danger of Sergio Pace by marking him with Eugene
Banasik worked well to Juventus' frustration.
PROSPECTS FOR '91
TRANSFER NEWS:
There has been quite a bit of activity in the transfer market in the off season. As
many would be well aware dual premiership coach Eugene Mycak has left to join rival club
Hobart Juventus. After the last two successful years with the club he achieved all he felt
he could with the existing squad. The departure of Eugene saw a search for an experienced
coach who could take over the reins of the most successful club of recent times.
Peter Irving fitted the positon required by the club, bringing with him a wealth of
experience, having coached at National League level with Newcastle. Peter also had a two
year stint with Hobart Juventus, and after a couple of idle years has decided to re-enter
the soccer arena, and he is wished all the best in the task presented him. Danny Donohue
has also come to the club in an assisting role to Peter. Danny's experience, having played
for many years in both State League and Division One competitions will be an asset to both
Peter and the club.On the player front, highly rated goalkeeper Peter Groenewoud has
decided to broaden his horizons and is currently training with Sydney Italian side APIA
Leichardt. After trialling successfully Peter suffered a knee injury, and his transfer is
not yet complete, but we wish Peter the best of luck.
The large gap created by the departure of Peter Groenewoud has led to the search for a
suitable replacement. Zlatko Belanic looks to be the one intent on taking on the role,
after proving his competence at Croatia. After a serious head injury received in a game
against Calies in July 1989, Zlatko has made a successful return to soccer playing in most
of Croatia's games last year.
However, the club's strength has traditionally come from the junior ranks, and there
are a number of promising juniors. Many of the juniors this year will be trying for spots
in the reserves and senior sides, and last year a few managed to play in senior team cup
games. This experience is very important to up and coming players and helps the clubs
future. With the senior team playing less Saturday games this year, more support from the
senior players can be given to the junior teams this year.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The 1990 Annual General Meeting was held in early December with many of the committee
staying on for the 1991 season. New members on the committee are Scott Young and Frank
Bansel. The meeting outlined the difficult financial times that the club is going through,
but several proposals and increased support from the TSA sees a much healthier upcoming
year. Members are encouraged to attend functions and get-togethers on a regular basis,
enabling the committee to know the best times to plan for functions and their format. The
full committee for 1991 is as follows:
David Stoddart President
Bill Jones Vice-President
David Stoddart Jnr Secretary
Andrew Leszczynski Treasurer
Craig Pitt General Committee
Mark Baran General Committee
Scott Young General Committee
Bruno Gentile General Committee
Frank Bansel General Committee
The difficult year experienced financially saw many members dig deep, and the following
people are gratefully thanked for their generous donations:
Stan Roberts $100
George Stepik $50
Wally Dmuchowski $50
Basil Michalkowski $50
Anonymous $50
Wally Kazimierczak $20
Alex Leszczynski $20
Stefan & Linda Sikora $20
Romek Woloszynowicz $10
Peter Czyzowicz $10
Rothmans league sponsorship
The S.T.S.A. (formerly the T.S.A) made what has turned out be a controversial decision
regarding their future sponsorship. They formed an agreement with the cigarette company
Rothmans, which is in direct opposition to the national soccer sponsorship ideals. It was
a brave decision but one which will add $500,000 to Tasmanian soccer's funds over the next
five years, with the League now called the Winfield State League. Prizemoney for the State
League has now been doubled, and the re-introduction of a Statewide Knock-Out Cup combined
with the current Summer Cup will see all teams vying for their share of the spoils.

Walter Pless and David Martin should be congratulated for their committment and
persistence in gaining media coverage for soccer. I'm sure all soccer devotees have read
Walter's daily columns in the The Mercury during the season, and David has managed to
secure a popular weekly segment in the Southern Star. All soccer followers should support
these two "media men" in any way possible.Without them soccer's profile would be
far smaller.
Pre-season training will commence for Seniors and Reserves teams on Thursday 31st
January. Junior teams will be notified when training will commence. It's doubtful whether
we can drag the old men of soccer, the Division Three side out to train but they are more
than welcome. The training ground used will be Goodwood Primary School until Clare Street
becomes available after the cricket season finishes.
COMING UP:
In mid to late February a barbeque will be organised for all teams to enable all
players, members and parents to get together before the season starts. It will also allow
us to organise the season's training schedules and to register players for 1991. We will
advise you of dates, venue and other details as soon as finalised.
We hope to get the next edition of The Talon
out before the commencement of the season. It is aimed at being a club newsleter, so any
input towards it is appreciated. We will hope to have more information on the junior sides
next issue, including any known rostering information and hopefully some articles based
around their 1990 season."
