Incorporating Four CircPH3low
Fumigation Recirculation Systems
on the World's Largest Silos
The second phase of Beiliang's massive grain terminal incorporates what must be the largest grain silos in the world - twenty 30,000 tonne silos each 45 metres high by 32 metres in diameter - giving a total storage capacity of 600,000 tonnes and increasing the terminal's silo capacity to 1 million tonnes. Construction of the Phase 2 silos began in 1998 and they were completed in 2002.
In 1999, GTS won a contract to install four CircPH3low fumigation systems to fumigate all twenty of these silos. Like the Phase 1 project, the fumigation system incorporates on-site mixing of "cylinder phosphine" and CO2 from a cryogenic bulk storage container.
The project involved the installation of approximately 2 km of ductwork, on-site mixing system and four fumigant dispensers. The dispensers and mixing system are identical to those used in the Phase 1 project.
GTS completed installation and commissioning of the equipment "on time" in July 2000.
Considering the huge volume of each silo it can be estimated that fumigating them using tablet formulations would have required the use of 180 kg of tablets for each silo, making this form of fumigation impracticable. It is unlikely that any fumigation system other than CircPH3low would have been viable for these silos.
