DOUG SPOWART on ARTISTS' BOOKS

The artist book in the form of boxed sets and books has been a part of my art production for fifteen years.

It grew out of my dissatisfaction with wall art and its transient communicative form ­ that being the duration of the exhibition.

My books enable an experience for the viewer that requires no more that a pair of eyes, a tabletop or lap. The book is held and an intimacy exists between the viewer and the subject viewed ­ a personal communication is exchanged.

The object that is the book for me is also a thing of beauty.
