What is VGA Planets?
In the past, VGA Planets has been described by using very long paragraphs filled with adjectives. Instead of reproducing one of those sometimes complex paragraphs here, I've listed words that describe VGA Planets, and give a short explanation after each.
- 11-Player
There are 11 different races in VGA Planets, and each is controlled by a human player or a computer player. This allows for an endless variety of games, as each combination of players allows for different strategies and tactics.
- Diplomacy
Your chances of surviving to the end of the game increase when you form alliances with your neighbours. An ally is someone that you don't have to fight (unless of course he turns out to be an enemy in disguise).
- Economy
In order to win, you will have to pay attention to your race's economy. You cannot simply build warships and hope to win. You will also have to build freighters to help you colonize other planets. Minerals and money will have to be transported to your starbases, to be used to build new ships.
- Space
VGA Planets is a futuristic space game, consisting of 500 planets spread out over a 2000x2000 light year square.
- Strategy
VGA Planets is perhaps first and foremost a strategy game, and is frequently likened to Chess. You have a better chance of winning if you spend time planning your actions before each turn.
- Turn-Based
VGA Planets is not a real-time game. Your host sends you a file that you open using a VGA Planets client program. You then make your moves at your leisure, and when you're finished, your client makes a file that you send to the host. When the host receives all of the players' turns, or when a specified deadline has passed, the host updates the game files, and sends you another file. The biggest benefit of a turn-based game is that you are not penalized if you make your moves more slowly than someone else. You can spend an hour at a turn that someone else would rush through in five minutes, if you choose.
- War
Combat is a very important part of VGA Planets. You will have to create fleets of starships to battle enemy planets and ships. Victory depends on the strength of your ships vs. the strength of their defenses.
